Three University of Tennessee at Chattanooga juniors are ranked in the initial Top 20 in their respective weight classes by Amateur Wrestling News. Mike Pongracz (141 pounds), Sean Mappes (174) and Jared Johnson (285) each is listed at No. 20. Mappes won his weight class in the Southern Conference tournament last season, while Pongracz was a runner-up and Johnson finished third. All three advanced to the NCAA tournament. The Mocs' Blue-Gold meet is scheduled for Oct. 29, and their first dual meet is at home against Stanford on Nov. 7. They began official practice Saturday.

Golf

* The UTC women's golf team is tied for third with Elon after Monday's 36 holes in the Pinehurst Challenge on the Pinehurst No. 1 course in North Carolina. The Mocs shot a collective 1-under-par 287 and then a 288 and are five shots behind leader East Carolina and two behind Iowa going into the final round of the 19-team event. UTC's Cris Perez and Monica San Juan are tied for 14th at 143, and Emily McLennan and Megan Woods are tied for 24th at 145.

* UTC's Andrew Weathers is tied for second place at 5-under 139 (70-69) and the Mocs share sixth as a team in the AutoTrader.com Collegiate tournament at Duluth, Ga. They are at 576 with Georgia State, four shots behind third-place Troy and three behind UNC Greensboro in the field of 14. Lipscomb leads South Florida by 10 shots with a 553. UTC's Brooks Thomas is tied for 14th at 143, and Wes Gosselin and Stuart Thomas also are in the top 50 individually at 147 and 149.

* The Dalton State women's golf team shot a 296 and leads by seven strokes after the first day of the 36-hold Thomas University Fall Classic at Kinderlou Forest in Valdosta, Ga. SCAD Savannah is second to the NAIA's fifth-ranked Roadrunners in the 10-team field. All five Dalton State players shot in the 70s, led by Katie Dalton with a second-place, even-par 72. Julia McQuilken and Erika Wardzinski are tied for fourth at 74, Caroline Griffin shot a 76 and Rachel Rebne shot a 79.

* After taking the first-round lead Sunday with a 309 in the GolfWeek Fall Invitational at Miramar Beach, Fla., the Sewanee women's team dropped to second Monday despite shooting only one stroke higher. Texas-Tyler had a 303 and is one ahead of the Tigers in the field that includes seven members of the NCAA Division III top 20. Sewanee's Emily Javadi shot a 3-under 69 in the first round and is still second individually at 147. Alison Eleey is tied for 13th at 156, and freshmen Sophia Morrill and Meghan Symonds are tied for 22nd at 159.

Auto Racing

* Marvin Crutcher was the 5:50 Class heads-up winner Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip in his 1927 Ford Roadster. He earned the top prize of $3,000 with a 5.50-second run. Ricky Barnes from Ringgold was second with a 5.52. Nathan Wells was first with Keith Thomas second in the 6:00 class, and Justin Dempsey was first with Jake Clayton second in 7:00. More than 100 cars were entered in six classes, and other winners and their runners-up were Shane Stack and Rick Weatherbee, Morris Wooten and Floyd Christman and Corey Cosby and Tony Phillips.

Volleyball

* Covenant sophomore setter Schuyler Moore was chosen the USA South volleyball player of the week after recording 41, 41 and 28 assists; 15, 22 and 12 digs; and four, eight and four kills in the Lady Scots' three matches last week. This was her first POW honor but the fourth in a row for Covenant.

Field Hockey

* Virginia Barry scored in each half and Kat Mulligan, Katie Wilson and Ellen Copper also scored as the Sewanee field hockey team won 5-0 over visiting Bethany on Monday. Luna Goodale and Catherine Estes had assists for the Tigers (9-3), who outshot the West Virginia team 22-13.

Running

* Sewanee's Amy Lee and Mark McAlister were the Southern Athletic Association cross country runners of the week after leading the Tigers teams to fourth-place finishes in the Kentucky Wesleyan Fast Cats Classic on Saturday. McAlister was eighth in the men's 8k; Lee was 16th in the 5k field of mostly Division II and NAIA runners.
