MACON, Ga. - Two of the three northwest Georgia wrestling teams competing in the GHSA state duals fell into the consolation bracket Thursday after tough losses in the opening round.
The first-round winner was Ringgold, which took down Franklin County 51-23 in Class AAA. The Tigers, the Area 6 champions, will face Blessed Trinity, a 38-33 winner over Spencer, this morning in the quarterfinals.
Other Class AAA winners were top-seeded Jefferson, second-seeded Jackson, McNair, Lumpkin County, Rockmart and Toombs County, which defeated Calhoun 40-34.
The Yellow Jackets, however, remain alive in the consolation bracket after a 66-16 win over Jordan. They will face the loser of the Ringgold/Blessed Trinity match today.
In Class AAAA, Area 7 runner-up Heritage lost 43-31 to Buford but earned a 54-27 win over Cook in the consolation round. The Generals will face the loser of the Woodward Academy/Locust Grove match today.
Top-seeded Gilmer rolled into the quarterfinals with a 66-15 win over North Hall and will face the Woodward/Locust Grove winner. Other Class AAAA winners Thursday were Marist, Pike County and West Laurens.
Trion will begin competition today in Class A with an 8 a.m. match with Eagle's Landing Christian Academy. Today's schedule will go through the championship semifinals and the consolation quarterfinals in each of the six classes.
