A memorial service for former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football player, coach and athletic director Harold Wilkes has been set for Saturday at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, beginning at 2 p.m. Wilkes, 85, died on Dec. 23. After growing up in Valley Head, Ala., he spent two years in the U.S. Army and then began his UTC (then UC) career. He played and coached under A.C. "Scrappy" Moore and then succeeded him as head coach and had a 9-1 season to begin his five years in that role. As AD he hired Joe Morrison to succeed him in 1973, and he oversaw the school's move up to NCAA Division I among other achievements. The Wilkes family asks that anyone wishing to honor his memory donate to the Harold Wilkes Scholarship Fund through checks to the UC Foundation, mailed to Chattanooga Athletics (Attn.: Mocs Club), 615 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37403.

-UTC has three top-eight seeds for the prestigious Southern Scuffle wrestling tournament it is hosting Monday and Tuesday at McKenzie Arena: Bryce Carr at 184 pounds and Scottie Boykin at 197, each seeded No. 3, and Alonzo Allen, the seventh seed at 125. Reigning NCAA champion Penn State, which won six Scuffles in a row before missing the tournament last year, leads the impressive 25-team field with seven No. 1 seeds - Zain Retherford at 149, Jason Nolf at 157, Vincenzo Joseph at 165, Mark Hall at 174, Bo Nickal at 184, Anthony Cassar at 194 and Nick Nevills at 285 - and has the No. 3 seed at 141 and the No. 4 at 133. Lehigh's Darian Cruz and Scott Parker are the favorites at 125 and 133 and teammate Luke Karam is No. 2 at 141, where Northern Iowa's Josh Alber is the No. 1 seed. Other teams participating are Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, North Carolina State, Stanford, Appalachian State, Navy, Duke, Campbell, North Carolina, Cleveland State University, Lock Haven, Gardner-Webb, Northern Colorado, Cal State Bakersfield, Drexel, Utah Valley, George Mason, The Citadel, Air Force and Hofstra. Eleven of the 25 finished in the top 32 of the 2017 NCAA tournament, with seven in the top 18. The Scuffle is presented by Compound Sportswear, and medal matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Tickets are on sale at TheSouthernScuffle.com and the arena box office, and action can be seen live on Flowrestling. The pay-per-view feed also will be available on Roku and AppleTV, according to a UTC release Saturday. Two-day reserved tickets cost $60, one-day reserved $35, two-day general admission $35, one-day general admission $20 and finals only (after 5 p.m. Tuesday) $10.
Basketball
-The Covenant College and Sewanee women's basketball teams both cleared three digits in the Sewanee Holiday Classic on Saturday, the guest Lady Scots prevailing 110-103 in two overtimes with Bekah Walter and Jessica Bell scoring 23 and 21 points and Joanna Smith contributing 16 plus 21 rebounds. Smith's rebound total was the third most in a single game in program history, behind two 22s, and the team's points total also was the third highest. Also for Covenant (5-5), Kaley Hallmark had 13 points, six assists and seven rebounds and Clara Dirkse Wolfe had 12 points. For Sewanee (3-6), which forced overtime with a 31-21 fourth quarter, Bella Taylor had 35 points, 13 rebounds and six assists and Hannah McCormack had 33 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Allison Hitchcock added 12 points and Sue Kim had seven of the Tigers' 25 assists.
-The Sewanee men also lost in extra time Saturday, 70-67 in one overtime at MacMurray, and wound up 4-6 for the 2017 part of their season. Luke Smith scored 25 points with four 3-point baskets and had a game-high four steals for Sewanee, while Adrian Thomas scored 16 points, Matt Lee had 12 with four 3s and Cam Caldwell cleared nine rebounds. Brent Long had 20 points, 17 rebounds and six assists for MacMurray, also 4-6.
-Dalton State improved to 10-3 with an 82-79 victory Saturday in its Roadrunner Classic against Life University. The NAIA's 13th-ranked Roadrunners, who play Tuesday at Coastal Georgia, were led by Isaiah Box with 27 points and 7-of-12 success on 3s. Sean Chisolm and Reed Dungan added 19 and 18 points and Carnilious Simmons had another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. For Life (11-4), Undra Mitchem scored 21 points, David Scott scored 17 and Zach Landis had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
