Around the Region: Chattanooga's Wesley Cash collects his 19th national or world tennis title

Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., blistered Chris Bussert of Decatur, Ga., and Rollin Rhone of Los Angeles 6-1, 6-1 in the USTA Men's 60 grass court national championship match Friday in Pontiac, Mich. Vines, who plays today in the singles final, and Cash now have nine age-group national and world titles together. Cash has 18 major doubles championships and one in singles.

Fishing

-Jacob Wheeler of Harrison is third in the Bassmaster Elite Series season point standings after two days of the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship on Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota. He goes into the final round Sunday morning - the tournament takes a break today for fan events - with 885 points to 902 for leader Brandon Palaniuk of Idaho and 890 for Jason Christie from Oklahoma. Christie is 17th in the tournament while Palaniuk is 20th, but Wheeler is fourth at 46 pounds, 15 ounces after weighing 24-5 with his five keepers Friday. "It was flat-out awesome. It was one of the best days of smallmouth fishing I've ever had," Wheeler said in a B.A.S.S. release. "I probably caught 30-plus smallmouth - and there were a lot of times when I would be disappointed to realize it was just another 4-pounder when I set the hook."

Golf

-The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team is tied for 10th place after the first round Friday in the 10-team Mason Rudolph tournament at the Vanderbilt Legends North Course at Franklin, Tenn. The Mocs and Clemson are at 4-over-par 292, one shot ahead of Middle Tennessee State and three behind South Carolina and Virginia. Senior Megan Woods and sophomore Holly Morgan led UTC with even-par 72s, followed by Cristina Perez at 73 and Maddy McDaniel with a final-hole eagle for a 75. Arkansas leads the team standings at 273, and Vanderbilt is second at 275 with Arizona State third at 277. Jenna Burris from St. Andrew's-Sewanee had the third best MTSU score, a 73.

-Bryan College's Krista Reinhardt finished third at 157 and made all-tournament in a field of 53 golfers, many from NCAA Division II and Top 25 NAIA teams, this week in the Bill Sergent Invitational at London, Ky.

Volleyball

-Despite a match-high 16 kills from Ally Ford, the UTC volleyball team lost 3-1 to Illinois on Friday in the Dr. Wynn Invitatonal at Missouri State. The set scores were 25-14, 25-27, 25-16, 25-11. Like UTC's Thursday foe, Missouri State, and today's opponent, Washington State, Illinois (7-2) received Top 25 votes in the latest coaches' poll. Also for the Mocs (7-6), Brianna Anderson had nine kills, Maddie Halsey 25 assists and Megan Kaufman 14 digs.

-Bryan lost 3-0 (25-5, 25-14, 25-22) in AAC volleyball at St. Andrews. Veronica Salas had 15 assists and 18 digs and Kristen Parrish added 14 digs for Bryan (2-11, 1-2); Hope Burnett led in kills with seven.

-Covenant is 3-6 after losing 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-16) to Averett in the Maryville Invitational. Schuyler Moore had 34 assists, Ginny Moore had 11 kills, Jessica Seehorn served four aces and Hannah Stewart and Emily Moore had 16 and 11 digs in defeat.

Soccer

-Lee University defeated the Delta State women 6-1 and the DSU men 3-0 in a Gulf South soccer doubleheader Friday in Cleveland. The Lady Flames (3-2, 2-0) had a 2-0 lead before their game was six minutes old, on goals by Suzanne Arant and Summer Lanter from assists by Mia Hollingsworth and Katie Cloud, and Riley Engels made it 3-0 by halftime on a McKenzie Bricker assist. Lanter added a second goal and Devin Healy and Carly Smoltz also scored for Lee, while Hollingsworth and Bricker had two assists apiece. DSU (0-5, 0-3) scored in the final minute. For the Lee men (2-1-2, 1-0), Jose Orellana scored in the first half and Jared McWhorter and Samaan Williams netted goals late in the game, Williams from a Tanner Carter assist.

-Baboucarr Njie's hat trick led North Carolina Wesleyan to a 4-0 USA South men's win Friday at Covenant. The Scots are 2-4, 0-1.
