VW rail work OK'ed

Some $10.7 million in state funds was approved today to build the outbound railroad terminal at Volkswagen's auto assembly plant in Chattanooga.

The city's Industrial Development Board OK'ed a contract for Thomas Brothers Construction Co. of Chattanooga to do the work.

City Engineer Bill Payne said vehicles produced at the VW factory will go to the terminal for shipment by rail or truck.

The site, located just south of the plant building, will be leveled and prepped for the installation of rail, officials said.

The $1 billion plant is expected to be ready to ship vehicles in the first part of 2011, according to VW.
