An auto website says Volkswagen is planning a major expansion for its Chattanooga plant that could add production space for a new VW crossover and ultimately for Audi and Porsche vehicles.

The Volkswagen brand's January worldwide sales grew by 16.5 percent compared to a year ago, the company reported Wednesday.

Volkswagen officials said today that the first cars made at the Chattanooga plant for sale to customers will take place in March.

Founded more than 70 years ago in Germany, Volkswagen has gone from producing one version of "the people's car" in its home country to being the third-largest automaker in the world.

Volkswagen's new Chattanooga-made Passat will be a first-in-its class sedan featuring German engineering but targeted at American motorists, according to the automaker.

One of America's best-selling snack foods is made by the Collegedale-based McKee Foods Corp.

After a whirlwind week in which Volks- wagen debuted its Chattanooga-made sedan and analysts weighed in with reviews ranging from "elegant" to "average," the company will get to work producing and marketing the car it hopes will help propel VW to worldwide sales supremacy.

Volkswagen today powered up its new $21 million supplier park adjacent to the automaker's assembly plant.
