Samuel Yette

Samuel F. Yette, 81, died peacefully Friday evening, Jan. 21, 2011, in Laurel, Md., following his battle with Alzheimers disease.A journalist, author, professor and photojournalist, he was a former resident of Chattanooga and taught English at Howard High School.He was born in Harriman, Tenn., the 12th of a large family of 13. He attended Morristown College and then graduated from Tennessee State University where as a student he founded the Meter, the college newspaper, a publication that for more than 60 years has continued. He later received his masters degree in journalism from Indiana University.He enjoyed many job experiences; among them were executive secretary of the Peace Corps where he was second in command to the recently deceased Sargent Shriver; the first black correspondent fro the Washington division of Newsweek Magazine; and professor of journalism at Howard University. He was the author of award winner "The Choice" which was used as a textbook in over 50 colleges and universities.Samuel was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie; his father and mother, and six siblings.Samuel is survived by two sons, Michael of Forrestville, Md., Fred (Alesha) of Washington DC; two granddaughters, Maya and Laila; one brother and five sisters (one sister, Lyda Yette McKeldin of Chattanooga.Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 28 at Zion Baptist Church, 4850 Blagden Ave., Washington, D.C.
