Michael Cox and Barbie Walker Vaughn are other members of her immediate family. She is also survived by her sisters, Annice (Carl) Johnson and Sharon (John) Shoaf. Many nieces, nephews, and friends remain.Fern was a 1967 graduate of East Ridge High School and the early 1970s LPN program through Erlanger Hospital and the City of Chattanooga. She attended Cleveland State Community College.Fern served others in many ways. Professionally, she worked in the newborn nurseries of Memorial, Erlanger, and East Ridge Hospitals. She was a certified lactation consultant working through the Chattanooga Health Department. Until her recent retirement she worked at Continucare and served critically ill children and adults.Ferns greatest joy in life was her children. Each of them received the message of Christs saving grace from their mother. She modeled the characteristics of a Christian mother for them individually and as a group. Her daily prayer and hope for each of them was that each would become a Christian and live a Christian lifestyle.Fern made sure her mother (Ruby), daddy (Fernwood), and mother-in-law (Eula) were never placed into a nursing home when they reached the point of not being able to take care of themselves. Each received Ferns loving care in Ferns home until each passed away.As a wife, Fern took her husband Mike who was "rough around the edges," reinforced his hidden qualities only she recognized, and helped him become a better person. Fern and Mike met when she was fourteen and he was fifteen. They married when she was seventeen and he was eighteen. They celebrated the 44th anniversary on June 17, 2011. Altogether, they spent 48 years as a couple. Her friends stepped forward to help the family through her unexpected illness. There was never a single night that Mike and Fern were without at least one and most of the time two friends staying with them. The entire staff at Heritage High School supported the family with prayers, by sending food, email messages, visits, and phone calls. As the saying goes, "Its great to be a General!"From the very beginning of this unexpected event, the family only asked those praying for Fern to pray specifically that Fern experience as little pain as possible and to be able to endure the challenges gracefully. Grace and mercy were given to us. The prayers were answered.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at the funeral home with the Rev.
