Albert Van MaanenAlbert Leon Van Maanen Sr, also known as "Van", passed away Sunday April 22, 2012, at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his father, Albertus Van Maanen; mother, Margaret Van Maanen; brother, Gary; and daughter, Kathy Pickens, of Sioux City, Iowa.He is survived by his wife, Karen Smith Van Maanen; his first wife, Nancy Mason; and their nine children, Kathy, Albert, Debbie, Sherry, Larry, Shelly, Stephan, Callie, Jeff and all of their spouses. He has 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.Van was born Sept. 26, 1937 in Sioux City, Iowa. He worked at Sunset Nurserys and Fisher Florist as a young adult. Van opened his own flower shop, Vans Uptown Florist, in 1963. He later moved to Chattanooga and in 1983 opened up Killian Daisy Florist.Van was a very successful and hard working business man. He lived each day with a simple quote, "If you're not laughing, you're not living!" Van will be missed not only by his family but friends and everyone who knew him throughout his years in the floral industry.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday May 2, 2012, in the Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Jason Cobb officiating.Entombment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.Visitation with the family will be 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the funeral home.Arrangements have been entrusted to Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services Franklin Strickland Pinkard Bryan Smith Funeral Directors, 1724 McCallie Ave., 423-265-4414.
