Virginia Warren

Virginia Haven Warren, 86, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 after a lengthy illness.She was preceded in death by her parents Hershel and Orpha Haven; brothers Gerald, Robert and Kenneth Haven; and sister Opal Baker.Virginia taught in the Chattanooga Public Schools for forty years, the majority at East Lake Middle School. She earned her BS and Masters degrees in Education at the University of Chattanooga and was one of only three women in her class to graduate from the McKenzie School of Law.From 1970 to 1976, she was the first woman to represent Tennessee on the N.E.A. Resolution Committee which endorsed the Title lX federal mandate for sexual equality. She also served as President of the Chattanooga Education Association and was recognized as Chattanooga Teacher of the Year (1962) and T.E.A. Distinguished Classroom Teacher (1982). She also received the prestigious Susan B. Anthony Award in 1996, given by the Tennessee Education Association. In her retirement years she continued to work with the Retired Teacher's Association in many varied capacities to further the cause of Public Education.Virginia is survived by her daughter Haven Glascock (Henry), of Lookout Mountain; William Warren (Paige) of Chattanooga; grandchildren Taylor Warren and Henry Glascock, Jr.; two great grandsons, Hank and Andy Glascock. She also leaves many friends including her dear friends Margie Parker and Barbara Lane. The family is especially grateful to Dr. Charles Crump and the staff of Amedisys Hospice.A private funeral service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hamilton County Retired Teacher Scholarship Fund, 3704 Hickory Valley Road, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37421. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. today, Dec. 27, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road.
