William Purkey

William "Bill" Eugene Purkey, 82, of Ooltewah, Tenn., went to live in Glory Saturday, July 28, 2012. He was born on Sept. 15, 1929 in Gastonia, N.C., to the late Hubert and Iva McCarver Purkey. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Robert and Terry Purkey and by one grandson, Brian Morrow, Jr.Bill retired from the U. S. Air Force at Travis Air Force Base on November 1, 1970, having served in the United States, Europe and Vietnam. He also retired from the K-Mart Corporation, where he was in a managerial position. He was an avid golfer and Atlanta Braves fan. He was of the Baptist Faith.Bill will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Mary Norris Purkey. He is survived by three stepdaughters, Patricia Norris Davis, Sandra Norris (Clarence) Turner and Sonya Norris Morrow; six grandsons; one granddaughter and nine great-grandchildren. His little dog, Maggie, will miss him.His Celebration of Life will be held in the Chapel at Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31 and will be led by Avalon Hospice Chaplain, Don Sapp. Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Military Cemetery with full Military Honors.
