Eddie Davidson

Eddie Davidson, longtime sports writer and columnist for the Chattanooga Times died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012. He was 82.He joined the Times in 1954 and retired in 1994. As a reporter, he wrote mainly about golf and wrestling, covering many golf tournaments, including the U.S. Open, the USGA Amateur championships, the National PGA championships and the Masters, as well as state and local events. In wrestling, he covered the first 34 state high school championships, several NCAA championships, and the 1993 World Cup matches staged in Chattanooga.Davidson was inducted into the International Churchmens Sports Hall of Fame and was honored by them as Sportswriter of the Year in 1970. He was also inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005. Edwin Lloyd Davidson was born in Norfolk, Va., Oct. 15, 1929, to Lloyd Wallace Davidson and Sophia Schaefer Davidson. He earned a bachelors degree in journalism from the University of Georgia in 1954. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. In addition to his work at The Times he did work for the Associated Press and the Atlanta Journal and Constitution.Davidson was a communicant of Grace Episcopal Church.He is survived by a wife, Louise Bookout Davidson; a daughter, Cindy Davidson; two grandchildren, Emily and Thomas; and two brothers, Philip Davidson, of Titusville. Fla., and John Davidson, of Smryna, Ga.He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Davidson.A memorial service was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, at Grace Episcopal Church, with a visitation at 10 a.m. and a reception followed the service.
