Robert Veller

Robert "Bob" Henry William Veller, 93, of Walden, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012.He is remembered for his easy smile and generous heart; his last week was spent at home in the company of his family and in the compassionate care of Hospice of Chattanooga.He was born and raised in New York City and was a resident of Signal Mountain for 51 years. Bob was active in many civic organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, the Alhambra Shrine and Flying Fezz, the Hamilton County Mental Health Association, and the Lions Club Sight Service Association. He also served as Mayor of Walden. While Bob was eager to give his time to his community, he was most proud of his service to our nation. Bob was a Colonel in the United States Air Force and served his country honorably for 38 years. He was a pilot in World War II and Korea, and he served as Commander of the West Virginia and Tennessee Air National Guards. Among his many commendations, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert O. Veller and Lilly W. Veller.Bob will be missed most by his devoted wife of 70 years, Joyce Y. Veller; sons, Robert (Sheila), Scott, Gregg (Gina), and Van (Carmen). His daughters, Joan (Rick) Jones and Katie (Mike) Myers also mourn the passing of their beloved father. He is survived by his loving granddaughters, Kelli (Devin) Munczenski and Kristin (Allen) Burnette; and his great-grandchildren, Kelstin, Xander and Kallyn.Like the devotion he showed his family and the generosity he showed to his community, his last act, too, was altruistic; he has donated his body to science to foster the learning of others. The family will have a private celebration of life, but if friends would like to remember Bob, they can make a donation in his name to Hospice of Chattanooga.
