Dorothy McGauley

Dorothy Crabtree McGauley, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Manorhouse, her "home away from home." She was born on Sept. 13, 1920 in Chattanooga and was the youngest daughter of John Farris Crabtree and Emilie Neidhardt Crabtree. She attended Bright School, Girls Preparatory School and Mary Baldwin College before returning to Chattanooga and met her future husband, Jack, who was stationed with the 6th Calvary at Fort Oglethorpe.She was affectionately known as "Dot" by her friends and grandchildren.Dot was preceded in death by her husband, John R. "Jack" McGauley; and her sister, Charlotte Crabtree Reynolds.Dot is survived by her children, Dr. John R. (Toni) McGauley Jr., Michael F. (Stormy) McGauley, of Chattanooga and Mary Virginia McGauley, of Hardeeville, S.C.; and her grandchildren, Michael F. McGauley Jr., of San Francisco, Calif., John Matthew McGauley, of Chattanooga and Meghan Caroline McGauley, of Bozeman, Mont.Dot was a devout longtime parishioner of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal, on Lookout Mountain where she was active in the Episcopal Churchwomen and the Tuesday morning prayer group.In her early years she was an active member of the Junior League of Chattanooga. She remained a Sustaining Member until age 80 when she became a Sustaining Member Emeritus. Dot also enjoyed the fellowship of many close friends on the golf course, at the bridge table and at weekly study groups on Lookout Mountain and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.Dot was a faithful wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family, friends and church. With her quiet and unassuming nature, she added inspiration and joy to the lives of everyone she touched. As the matriarch of the McGauley family, she will be greatly missed.Special thanks to her internist John Laramore M.D. and to her numerous caregivers including her sitting companion, Jannie Smart, and medical professionals from Manorhouse and Hospice of Chattanooga.There will be a graveside service in the Harriet Caldwell Memorial Garden at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 17, 2012. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd, Crabtree Farms, Tennessee River Gorge Trust, or Chattanooga Arboretum & Nature Center.
