Clara Dee Ghiden James, 94, of Chattanooga, departed this life on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at NHC Nursing Facility.Clara was born to the late James B. and Annie Mae Ghiden in Chattanooga, on Jan. 6, 1918.She was baptized and became a member of Missionary Ridge Baptist Church at an early age.Aunt Clara was educated in the Chattanooga Public School System and a 1935 graduate of Howard High School.At the age of 50, she was granted the opportunity to accomplish a lifelong dream to be a school teacher. She received her degree and teaching license from Wayne State University in Michigan.She taught and touched many lives for 12 years in the Romulus Michigan School System until her retirement in 1982. One of her favorite students has always stayed in touch and shared her family with her until her death.Aunt Clara was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and brothers, James B. Jr., Martin, Charles "Ebb" and Thomas Ghiden; sister, Annie Bell Ghiden Favors; stepson, Howard James, Detroit, Mich.She leaves to cherish her memories two sisters: Mrs. Rosa Ghiden Jones, Chicago, Ill. and Mrs. Kathryn Cowan, Chattanooga; stepson, Fredrick James, Las Vegas, Nev.; stepdaughter, Mrs. Delphine James Jones, Georgia; stepgrandchildren; and great-grandchildren, Detroit, Mich;, a host of nieces and nephews, a devoted niece and caregiver Mrs. Rita Martina (Jerome) White and other family members and many lifelong friends.The family would like to express special thanks to those assisting us in taking care of Aunt Clara, the NHC Nursing Facility and Hospice of Chattanooga.Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at noon in the chapel of the John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave. with the Rev. Willie Isom officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
