Ian Colin Jeffress Mitchell, M.Ed., died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 at Erlanger Hospital due to a cardiac episode. Colin was born Feb. 28, 1949 to Alice and Ian Mitchell, who survive him. Colin is also survived by Margaret Mitchell Smith (Stephen), Charles Mitchell (Ann), and Ware Mitchell (Linda); His nephews and nieces include M. Craig Smith (Emily); his Godchild Scott B. Smith; Bryan Mitchell (Meredith); Charlotte Mitchell, Lauren Mitchell, Laura Echerd, and Lindsey Powell (Rainer). Colin was a resident of Chattanooga, a Certified Professional Counselor and Private Investigator licensed by the State of Tennessee. He was previously employed by the Tennessee Department of Corrections as a probation and parole officer, training coordinator and accreditation manager. More recently he worked as a counselor and clinic director for the Private Clinic in north Georgia and as an adjunct faculty member of Chattanooga State Technical Community College.Colin earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He later completed his graduate degree in Counseling at UTC. He was a 1967 graduate of Brainerd High School after attending Brainerd Junior High School and Missionary Ridge Elementary School. Colin was a volunteer for several organizations including Hospice, Homicide Survivors Healing Circle, Habit for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga where he served as a Board Member and Families and Friends of Murder Victims. Lifelong friends include Alex, Jean, Buddy, Ronnie, and Darrell. The Rev. Susan Butler will conduct services for the family and friends of Colin on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Garden at Grace Episcopal Church.
