Carl Godfrey

Rev. IIIATHENSRev. Carl Dewitt Godfrey III went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 17, 2012. Born in Charlotte, N.C. on Nov. 30, 1952, Mr. Godfrey is the son of the late Carl Dewitt Godfrey Jr. and Shirleen Dixon Godfrey Bahamian Missionaries. Seeking Gods plan for his own life, he entered Word of Life Institute in Schroon Lake, N.Y. From there, he attended Tennessee Temple University and graduated from Chattanooga State during which he met his beloved wife Carlene in 1975. Moving to Athens in 1982 with his wife and sons, he quickly involved himself in the community spreading his love of God through mission work and his membership to Joy Baptist Church since 1983. A role model and mentor, he served as Scout Master for his sons Boy Scout troops helping 13 young men achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. A great man in all his achievements, it was his devotion to God, family and unbridled joy for life that impacted everyone he encountered.In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 34 years, Carlene; son, Tony and wife, Karen; son, Derek and wife, Lauren; sister, Sheila Roberts and husband, Greg; brother, Tim and wife, Pam; sister Michelle; granddaughter, Taylor; grandson, Adrian, nieces, Ciana and Heather Wells; nephew, Donnie Roberts; and great-nephews, Jacob and Jude. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Black, Rev. Freddie Coile, and Dr. Henri Cher-Aime of Calvary Baptist Church, Nassau Bahamas will be officiating.
