Ethel "Chick" T. Phillips, 97, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at her Signal Mountain home.A native of Lancaster, Penn., she was born on Aug. 12, 1915, a daughter of the late Thomas C.S. and Anna Travis.She attended school in Pennsylvania and was a homemaker the majority of her life, working a short time in womens apparel at Hackneys-Waldorfs dress shop.Ethel loved gardening and always had the most beautiful yard in the neighborhood. Each day she would spend time in her sunroom, watching the birds and squirrels and enjoying her beautiful backyard.She was an avid reader up until a few months ago. It was difficult finding books she had not read in her 97 years.Ethel was a founding member and lifetime communicant of St. Peters Episcopal Church.In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Clair F. Phillips; son, Jeffrey T. Phillips; daughter, Julie P. Grant; and brothers, Franklin Travis, Thomas Travis and Charles Travis.Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara P. and Bill McKerley; grandchildren, Julia M. (Jeff) Hall, Joseph E. (Becky) McKerley, Christine G. Vandenberghe, Travis (Julie) Grant; great-grandchildren, Max M. Hall, J. Mitchell Hall, Alex J. Grant; nieces, Tillie Ann (David) Nelson of Michigan, Linda (Wayne) Gundy of Pennsylvania, Libby Sullivan of Delaware, and Nancy Levandusky of Pennsylvania.A celebration of Ethels life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at St. Peters Episcopal Church on Ashland Terrace with the Rev. and Honorable Sam Payne, the Rev. Doctor Valarie Carnes, and the Rev. Carter N. Paden officiating.The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service at the church.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. Peters Episcopal Church, 848 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN 37415, or Hearth Hospice, 100 Mitchell Road, Fort Oglethorpe, GA 30742.The family would like to extend gratitude to many for their special love and care they gave Ethel over the last two and a half years, including St. Peters Episcopal Church and Joanie Koch, Hearth Hospice, Nurse Debbie Headrick and Dr. Mary Bean, as well as caregivers, Barbara Volpe and Ann S.
