Joy Duckett

ROSSVILLE Joy Frances Anderson Duckett, 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, in a local hospital after a courageous struggle against cancer.She was born in Chattanooga to William Delmer and Lillian Deborah Anderson on Feb. 16, 1939.Joy was a member of the Elizabeth Lee United Methodist in Chickamauga, Ga. She graduated from Rossville High School in the class of 1957 and attended the University of Chattanooga.Joy's greatest interests were family, music, and quilt making, and she excelled in all these areas. Her family and friends will attest to the excellence of her culinary skills and sewing expertise, and everyone who knew her was aware of her musical accomplishments.Joy began her music studies in the band at Rossville High School and became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra at the age of 16 as a sophomore. She played bassoon in the symphony for 40 years, 20 years of which were as principal bassoonist. She played in the symphony core orchestra and in the Riverbend Quintet. In high school band she made Georgia All State Band in her junior and senior years, and she was picked in 1956 to represent Georgia in the MENC Golden Anniversary National High School Band in St. Louis.She was preceded in death by her parents; and daughter, Susan Joy Duckett. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Fred Duckett, of Rossville; son, Dale Duckett and granddaughter, Rachel Duckett, of Ringgold; sisters, Mary Ruth Hull and Winifred Eason, of Rossville; brother, Bill (Wanda) Anderson, of Taft, Tenn.; sisters-in-law Christine Claytor of Canton, N.C., Elsie Holllifield, of Chickamauga, Ga.; sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Reba Duckett, of Chattanooga; brothers-in-law, John Duckett, of Chattanooga, and Mark Duckett, of Philadelphia, Pa.; cousins, Sandra Simmons, of Mayfield, Ky., Judy Anderson, Fred (Sandy) Anderson, Lorette (Ed) Mitchem and Jerry (Cyrena) Anderson, of Greenville, S.C., Ralph (Pat) Ford; and numerous nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Rick Maeser officiating.Interment will be in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 850 Fortwood St., Chattanooga, TN 37403, Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church, 139 Cove Road, Chickamauga, GA 30707, or Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416.The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today Aug. 16 and noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Heritage Funeral Home and Crematory, Battlefield Parkway.Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, Fort Oglethorpe.
