Leonard McGowan

Leonard McGowan, 91, passed away on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at his Signal Mountain home with his loving family by his side.He was born on April 24, 1921 in Whitwell, Tenn., to the late Roy and Mamie McGowan.He was of the Church of God faith.Leonards passion was his music and fishing. He had played the bass for 30 years. He enjoyed traveling and playing bluegrass music at festivals. When not playing music, he was fishing or working in his garden. But he said that he had the most fun when he was with his family, where he was known as "Monkey Papaw".In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death his wife, Jobyna McGowan; brothers, Lester and Richard McGowan; and sister, Marie Pack.Survivors include his son, Arnold (Wanda) McGowan, of Signal Mountain; daughters, Carol McGowan, of New York and Dianne (Bill) Hart, of Cleveland; sisters, Louise Wiggins, of Soddy Daisy, Mary Bingham and Janie McGowan, of Ooltewah; six grandchildren, Travis, Brian and Michael McGowan, Angela Smedley, Chanda Centofanti and Donna Witkop; seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Kenny Oldham officiating.Interment will follow in Kilgore Cemetery, Whitwell, Tennessee with military honors.The family will receive friends for visitation today from 2-7 p.m. at the funeral home.Condolences and memories may be shared with the family by visiting www.hamiltonfuneraloptions.comArrangements are by Hamilton Funeral Home & Cremation Services; 4506 Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN. 423-531-3975
