As a young child her family moved to Rockwood, Tenn. where her father owned the general store and broom factory. She moved to Chattanooga, when she enrolled in the University of Chattanooga. It was there that she met her future husband, Belfield Carter, at a college dance. His student band was providing the music; he was the singer. It was love at first sight. Three months later they eloped and were married by a Justice of the Peace on Nov. 23, 1935 in Rossville. They were married for 60 years until Belfields death in 1995.Jimmie Jean and Belfield had four children, Jean, Belfield Jr., Dee and William. She devoted herself to her home and her family. Our favorite memories of Mom are her unyielding support for her children and grandchildren, her beautiful and precise sewing skills and her spectacular fried chicken. She was predeceased by her husband; and her daughter, Dee Hurst Petters. She is survived by her daughter, Jean Fisher; sons, Belfield Carter Jr. (Ethel Ware) and William Carter (Caro). Our Mom was affectionately known as Gran by her 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren (and one on the way).A memorial graveside service will be held at Arlington Memorial Park at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 2, with a gathering after the service at the home of Ethel Ware and Belfield Carter. If you choose to send a memorial honoring Jimmie Jean, please send it to the charity of your choice.Arrangements by Floral Hills Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Tucker.
