Barbara Brownsey Bassett passed away from complications of Alzheimers disease on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, in Ithaca, N.Y.Born in Raleigh, N.C. in 1927, she was devoted to her parents, Helen and Clyde Brownsey. Barbara grew up in Chattanooga where she met and married Army Captain Cortland "Cort" A. Bassett from Athol, Mass., in 1943. Following WWII, Barbara and Cort lived in Cheshire, Conn.; Royalston, Mass.; and Atlanta, Barbara and Cort retired in Knoxville. Following his death in 1986, Barbara lived in Vero Beach, Fla., Chattanooga and St. Charles, Mo., prior to moving to New York.Barbara was a southern "gentlewoman" with striking beauty and a soft voice. She was an avid reader and student of the Bible. Barbara had a flair for decorating her home and volunteered with the Red Cross and VA Hospital. She was at the forefront of health food and yoga and continued both as long as she could. As her children can attest, Barbara was a great cook and enjoyed all special occasions. Also a genuine listener, others enjoyed talking with her, because they felt she was sincerely interested.Barbara was always dedicated to family in her own special ways. She is survived by her children, Cortland Bassett (Regina Lennox) of Ithaca, N.Y.; Alan Bassett, of Lexington, Va.; Mark Bassett (Sophie Shockley), of St. Charles, Mo.; and Melissa Bassett (Lorimer Fauntleroy), of Hampton, N.H.
