Evelyn Cox

Evelyn McConnell Cox, 90, died in a local hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.A U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, she was the first female from this area to join the WAVES.Mrs. Cox attended Hunter College in New York, Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, Okla., and graduated from the University of Chattanooga with a bachelors degree.Mrs. Cox was formerly employed by The Chattanooga Times and was retired from TVA after 35 years of service.She was preceded in death by her parents, Tokie J. and Eldetta McConnell; and husband, William M. Cox.Survivors include one son, Terry Wayne (Jeanie) Cox, of Harrison; one daughter, Cathie Gayle Cox, of East Ridge; one grandson, Richard Wayne Cox, of New York, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Amy McConnell (Brad) Thomas, of Ooltewah; one great-granddaughter, Rylee McConnell Thomas; and one great-grandson, Andrew Morgan Thomas.Graveside services will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 at Chattanooga National Cemetery.The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 5-7.In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions to the charity of your choice.Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanoogaeastchapel.com.Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel, 404 S.
