Peggy Arrowsmith

Mary Riney "Peggy" Arrowsmith, died on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Alexian Village. She was born April 19, 1933 in Louisville, Ky. She graduated from Knoxville Catholic High School in 1951 and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1955 with degrees in Education and Library Science. At the University of Tennessee she was President of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, a Torchbearer, and a member of Mortar Board. Following graduation, she was employed as a reference librarian at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. There she met her future husband Peter Arrowsmith, a naval officer assigned to the Navy Nuclear Submarine Program. They were married on May 3, 1958 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Knoxville. Earlier in their marriage, they lived in several locations including Mystic, Connecticut where she taught high school English and where their son Tom was born. In 1963, they relocated to the Bethesda, Maryland where they lived for three decades and where their sons Ted and Peter were born. She was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, a Board Member of the House of Mercy, a successful Real Estate Agent, and a long-time volunteer at the Landon School. During this time and throughout her life, however, she was especially proud of her family responsibilities as wife and mother to her three sons.Following retirement, Peggy and Peter moved to Savannah, Ga., where they resided at the Landings on Skidaway Island and where she was a member of St. James Catholic Church. In 2009, they moved to Alexian Village on Signal Mountain where she was an avid bridge player. Here she also participated in numerous activities involving her local grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Riney; her brother John M. Riney, Jr.; her sisters Sister Mary Elizabeth Riney, RSM, and Mildred Lee Riney; two special aunts Mary Mildred Riney and Blanche Riney McCloud; brother-in-law Thomas B. Green; and special cousin James T. McCloud.She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Peter Arrowsmith; her son Thomas, his wife Monica, and their children Cris and Laney, of West Lafayette, Ind.; her son Edward, his wife Amy, and their children George, Mary Margaret, John, and Teddy, of Flintstone, Ga.; her son Peter, his wife Sepi, and their children Nicholas, Ryan, and Sophie, of La Jolla, Calif.; her sister Patricia R. Green, of Nashville; sister-in-law Creuza P. Riney, of Rio de Janiero, Brazil; Sylvia McCloud, of Brunswick, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a Memorial Mass at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, in the Alexian Village Chapel with Father Joseph Kuzhupil presiding, followed by a reception in the Brow View Community Room to meet the family.
