J. Jacques "JJ" Sweeney, a 39-year resident of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013, in Henderson, Nev.He was born on Nov. 6, 1923 in Moberly, Mo., the son of Rothwell Bernard Sweeney and Madeleine Voisin Sweeney, a French war bride.Jacques applied the G.I. Bill to earn a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri.He served with the First Cavalry Division in the southern Pacific theater during World War II, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. A highlight of his military service was being chosen for the honor guard for Gen. Mac Arthurs return to the Philippines.Jacques retired from the DuPont Chemical Co. in Chattanooga, after 38 years service and moved to Henderson, Nev. in 2004.Since 1956, he was active in a number of Masonic bodies, serving at the highest office of several. He was a member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite, Red Cross of Constantine, Tennessee Lodge of Research, Cherokee York Rite Sovereign College, Alhambra Shrine Temple in Chattanooga, TN and the Order of Eastern Star in Hixson.Jacques was a member of Green Valley Presbyterian Church, Henderson, often serving hot meals to homeless vets through St. Timothys Catholic Church. He traveled to Haiti, Honduras, Estonia, and Mexico on short-term Christian missions.Jacques is survived by his wife of 66 years Virginia; daughters, Pamela Jean Sweeney and Marietta (Jim) Beckham; grandsons, Jimmy (Jennifer) Beckham, and Kenny (Tereasa) Beckham; and eight great-grandchildren.A memorial service is planned for late August.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607 (www.shrinershospialsforchildren.org).
