Bob Holmes

Bob E. Holmes, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2013.Mr. Holmes was born and raised in Chattanooga. He was a 1948 graduate of Chattanooga Central High School where he was an "All-State" baseball player before signing with the New York Yankees and playing in their minor league farm system. He later graduated from the University of Chattanooga receiving a BS in Education. He went on earn two Masters Degrees from Middle Tennessee State University. Mr. Holmes retired from Chattanooga Public Schools after 30 years as a teacher, coach and administrator. He and his wife were world travelers and he was an avid reader and history buff.Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Bobbie June Thornburg Holmes; son, Steve (Diane) Holmes; grandchildren, Jill Holmes Smith (Kevin) and Steven Bradley (Autumn) Holmes; Great-grandchildren, Madi Holmes, McClain Holmes and Kagan Smith; brother, Michael Holmes; and several nieces and nephews, including Vic (Nancy) Holmes.He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Iola Holmes; and brothers, James and Wayne Holmes.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.Burial will be private.Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37415.Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist. 404 South Moore Road.
