Philip McNemer

Philip Ames McNemer, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 17, 2013.He was born March 21, 1930, in Little Rock, Ark. He attended Davidson College and graduated from the University of Arkansas. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he was employed by IBM in Dayton, Ohio.In 1954, he married the former Gay Butler, of Atlanta, and was transferred by IBM to Chattanooga. He was an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and Rivermont Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday school, served as a deacon, elder and elder emeritus. He was a loyal member of the Downtown YMCA for 56 years, where he served as a board member. He also served as division chairman of the United Fund.He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Rick Lanz. The family members would like to express their deep gratitude for the many ways that they felt Gods love through their friends loving acts of kindness during his illness.He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Gay; daughters, Catherine Lanz, Knoxville; Ann (Ray) Barr, Chattanooga; Marian (Steve) Joyce, Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Benjamin Ames (Claire) Lanz, Greenville, S.C.; Katherine Key Joyce and Sarah Stewart Joyce, Chattanooga.Memorial services to celebrate his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Rivermont Presbyterian Church.
