AUSTELL Mary Hammett Terry died on Friday, March 29, 2013, after a prolonged illness.She was born in Cowpens, S.C. and attended Cowpens High School. She received a degree in Chemistry from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. and masters in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She met her future husband, Sam Jones Terry of Chattanooga, while in Chapel Hill and stated she "would never date that man because he talks too much." Despite his wordiness, she realized there was much to him. She fell in love and they married in Woodruff, S.C. After a short stay in Chattanooga, they moved to Austell and raised a family. As a dedicated mother and wife, she insisted on home-cooked meals and quality family time. She raised her family in the church with love and a firm but gentle hand. She was generous in opening her home and treated all as family. She had a passion for education and taught science in middle and high school for over 20 years spending her last 11 years at McEachern High School before retiring in 1993. She was an active member of the Ray White Sunday School Class and the Edna McGrady Circle at Bethany United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing and traveling the world with Sam.She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam to whom she was married for 43 years. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Roy Terry, of Lebanon, Tenn., and Dr. Jeff Terry, of Gainesville, Ga.; daughters, Mary Lynn Jones, of Atlanta, and Jane Terry, of Alexandria, Va.; and 13 grandchildren; Mary Claire Jones, Walker Jones, Caroline Terry, West Jones, Crawford Terry, Sarah Terry, Jake Jones, Abigail Terry, Forrester Terry, William Terry, Ella Jones, Robert Terry and Mary Katherine Binnie. She is also survived by her sister; Margaret Hammett of Cowpens, S.C.; and brothers, John Hammett, of Chesnee, S.C. and Gene Hammett, of Houston, Texas.The family also wishes to express our deep appreciation for Ny Kim Thok, Ben Rotschafer and John Clonts. Her last few years were blessed by their dedication, compassion and love.The family will receive guests at Carmichael Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m today, March 30.Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 1, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Smyrna. She will be interred at Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga, and there will be a short graveside service.Donations may be made in Mrs. Terrys memory to Bethany United Methodist Church, 760 Hurt Road, Smyrna, GA 30082.
