JASPER Melvin H. Hampton, 76, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013He was born in Palmer, Tenn., and was a longtime resident of Jasper. Mel was owner and operator of Hampton Trucking for 50 years. He was a member of Sewanee Lodge #405, Tracy City, Tenn. Mel was an enthusiastic motorcyclist and strong supporter of the Trail of Tears. He was an accomplished guitar player and vocalist of country and gospel music.He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Melvin C. "Bud" and Elizabeth Hampton; and his sister, Clata Frank, of Houston, Texas. Survivors include his wife, Kathy M. Hampton; sons, Randy (Rena) Hampton, Wesley A. (Roxanne) Hampton, of Palmer, Tenn.; daughters, Susan (Kenny) Knight, Estelle Springs, Tenn., and Ruth Ann (Rod) Hampton Harrison, of Hixson; two stepsons, Bruce Wesley Smith, of Stapleton, Ala., and Brian Lee (Amanda) Smith, of Bridgeport, Ala.; sister, Wanda Meeks, of Palmer, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
