BATTLE CREEK Verna Stephens, 89, a lifelong resident of the Battle Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 10, 2013, surrounded by all of her family.She was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Pauline Lewis Gilliam. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Stephens; beloved sister-in-law, Bettye Jewell Chance; and greatly loved cousin, Houston Gilliam.She is survived by her daughter, Carol Stephens Hargis, of Battle Creek; granddaughter, Jennifer Hargis (Joey) Foster, of Bridgeport, Ala.; grandson, Stephen Hargis, of Kimball, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Lacee (Matt) Leroy and Makalee Foster, both of Bridgeport; Riley and Lauren Hargis, of Kimball; and dearly loved former granddaughter-in-law, Angie Hargis West.She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in South Pittsburg, Tenn.Mama was a homemaker, known for her huge Sunday dinners, especially for her cornbread, fried chicken, chocolate and coconut pies. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a wonderful caregiver for any family member who needed her.Funeral sereeeeevices will be conducted from the South Pittsburg Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home at 2 p.m. CDT on Monday, May 13, 2013, with Rev. Ronnie Case and Jack Nichols, Hospice Chaplain officiating. Interment will follow at Gilliam Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. CDT today, May 11, at the funeral home.
