James MorelandRINGGOLD James Alfred Moreland, 84, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013. James was a lifelong resident of Catoosa County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy L. and Almalee Myrick Moreland; and by his brother, John Levoy Moreland. James was a graduate of Ringgold High School and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and an honor member of Ringgold United Methodist Church. James was a member of Quitman Lodge 106 F&AM for over fifty years; he had served as Worshipful Master. He was also a member of the Williams-Napier American Legion Post No. 40, and the VFW.James grew up on a farm in the Poplar Springs Community of Catoosa County. Farming remained an integral part of his life. In his early years, he raised cattle and chickens. He later became a co-owner of Buff and Moreland Produce Company.In 1972, James was elected as the sole commissioner of Catoosa County and retired from office in 1988. James worked diligently during his administration to make life better for all the citizens of Catoosa County. He will be long remembered for the improvements made and paid for during his tenure. James was very active in civic affairs at the state and local level; he remains well known and respected at all levels of state and local government. James served on the Board of Directors of Rossville Bank (Community Bank) for several years. His hobbies included gardening, hunting, and playing golf. He was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan; James enjoyed listening to popular, classical, and gospel music.Survivors are his wife, Jane Greeson Moreland; his son, Braden (Angela) Moreland; his grandson, Hunter Moreland; his great-nephew, Derek Firsdon; his brother, Lamar Moreland; his sister-in-law, Sylvia Moreland; his brother-in-law, Aubrey (Donna) Greeson; several nieces and nephews.The family suggests that memorials be made to Ringgold United Methodist Church, PO Box 99 Ringgold, GA 30736, or to the Catoosa County Children's Fund, 307 Cleveland Street, Ringgold, GA 30736. The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, at Ringgold United Methodist Church. Rev. John Purrington, Gary Knowles, and Ken Pitts will officiate. Mr. Moreland's body will lie in state at the church on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Burial will follow at Anderson Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and from 6 until 9 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway.Friends may visit www.heritagefh.com to share condolences with the family.
