Nancy Flory

Va. Nancy Sue Newton Flory, 76, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013. Nancy was born in Chattanooga on May 25, 1937 and was the only child of William and Bernice Newton. Nancy was educated in Chattanooga Public Schools, later receiving a scholarship and graduating from the University of Chattanooga. She was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority in which she held a variety of positions including President. Nancy was tapped into the Mortar Board academic honor society during her undergraduate years and was selected by the faculty to appear in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. After graduating in 1959 with a double major in education and art she began her career in Chattanooga Public Schools as a 4th grade teacher. She married Isaac L. Flory III on Dec. 16, 1960. In 1963 Nancy and Lynn settled in Elkton, Va., where she began her teaching career with Rockingham Public Schools at Elkton Elementary. She later earned her masters degree in education with a concentration in reading in 1977, and taught until she retired in 1999. Nancy was a career-long member of both the Rockingham County Education Association and the National Education Association. She joined and was an active member in the Shenandoah Valley Reading Association, the Virginia State Reading Association and the National Reading Association, holding various positions in these organizations over a number of years. Nancy was twice named as the Shenandoah Valley Reading Teacher of the year and was named the Elkton Lions Club Teacher of the Year. Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization that recognizes outstanding educators selected Nancy to be a member where she later served as president. Nancys dedication to learning and education was not only evident from her participation in these organizations, but also by way of the students whose lives she touched. Nancy and her family were active members of the Elkton United Methodist Church where she taught and served on various committees. Surviving are her husband, Isaac Lynnwood "Lynn" Flory III; two sons, Isaac L "Ike" Flory IV and his wife, Lisa Michel Flory, of Chesapeake, and William Newton "Bill" Flory and his wife, Sheryl Jones Flory, of Goochland County. She is also survived by granddaughters, Carole Marie Flory and Erika Ivy Flory; and grandson, Isaac Long "Zack" Flory V. A memorial service will be held at noon on Nov. 9, 2013 at Elkton United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Elkton United Methodist Church.
