Harold Shapiro

Harold M. Shapiro, formerly of Chattanooga, died on Sept. 27, 2013, in Baltimore, MD. He was 89. He was born in Boston, MA, on April 11, 1924. Following high school, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and saw action with the 26th Infantry Division, known as the "Yankee Division," 104th Regiment in northern France, the Rhineland, and the Battle of the Bulge. He was injured in Luxembourg and evacuated to England, later returning to Czechoslovakia with the occupying forces before being discharged in 1946. He was decorated for his service by both the United States and France, most recently being inducted into the French Legion of Honor in 2011. Harold and his family moved to Chattanooga in 1959, where he worked in sales for Lookout Beauty Supply. For 33 years, area salon owners welcomed Harold into their businesses. His warm personality, professionalism, and quick wit led many of his customers to consider him as not just a sales representative, but also a trusted friend. As a volunteer, he held leadership positions in various organizations, including the Boy Scouts and Beth Sholom Congregation. Harold was the beloved husband of Mille Shapiro (ne Cherney) to whom he was married for 66 1/2 years; beloved father of Nancy (David) Feierstein, Linda (Donald) Stone, and the late Robert Shapiro; devoted father-in-law of Connie Shapiro; loving grandfather of Libba (Ari) Lane, Hirsh (Daniella) Feierstein, Benjamin Stone, Jacob (Suzanne) Stone, Philip Shapiro, and Elana Shapiro; and loving great-grandfather of Eitan Lane. Harold will be remembered as a devoted family man, a proud veteran, a respected businessman, an esteemed role model, and a dear friend.
