Howard Thomas Matherley, 84, of Chattanooga, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013. He was born June 2, 1929, Mr. Matherley served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Tom was a member of East Ridge Church of Christ where he served as Elder for several years. He was dedicated to the Russian mission work at the East ridge congregation and helped plan and start a congregation in Margate, Fla., in 1968. Tom helped build and restore several church buildings throughout his life. He was dedicated to God and loved the church and his family very much. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ada Matherley; brothers, James Edward and Frank Matherley; sisters, Virginia Ratcliff and Wilma Bender. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Loretta; son, Lamar (Ione) Matherley; daughters, Teresa (Paul) Quesenberry, Sandy (Matt) Gutierrez; grandchildren, Nicole and Christopher Matherley, Rachel and Caleb Quesenberry; sisters, Lillian Painter and Clara Hazeldon; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in the funeral home chapel with Minister Charles Cochran and Minister Steve Matherley officiating. Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
