Samuel Denton Burgess Jr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 at the age of 84. Born Jan. 4, 1929 in Sparta, Tenn., Sam graduated from White County High School, serving with distinction in the US Navy Submarine Corps during the Korean war. After leaving the Navy Sam moved to Chattanooga to work at Dupont Fibers, where he stayed until retirement in 1985 after 37 years of service. In Chattanooga he met, courted, and married the love of his life, Barbara Dean Saxon. During their 56 years together they raised a family, watched them grow up, marry, and raise families of their own. In his retirement Sam enjoyed square dancing, traveling, and being involved in politics. Sam was a member of Concord Baptist Church and the Gardner Sunday School Class. Sam was a dedicated, gifted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and son. He knew people all over the country, and was quick to strike up a conversation. He had an amazing memory, and loved sports all of his life, playing, officiating, and then watching. He loved to follow his favorite Atlanta Braves and Tennessee Volunteers. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Samuel and Lee Ora Burgess, and grandson Isaac Paul Burgess. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Saxon Burgess, of Ringgold, Ga.; son Samuel Denton Burgess III (Cathy), of Putian, China; daughter Lea Ann Burgess Bolick (Gene), of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren Beth Bolick Smith (Drew), of Chattanooga, Sarah Burgess, of Chattanooga, Roger Bolick (Rachel), of Memphis, Tenn., JoAnna Burgess Lee (John), of Chicago, Ill., Lydia Burgess, of Louisville, Ky., Sam Burgess IV, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Grace Burgess, of Putian, China. Funeral service will be held at Heritage at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, with Rev. Dr., David King and Rev. Aaron Martin officiating.
