Robin Hines TULLAHOMA Robin Hinton Hines, 76, a Coffee County commissioner, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at his home in Tullahoma. He was born in Nashville on July 18, 1937, the son of C. Vernon and Laurabel Carter Hines. He graduated from Isaac Litton High School and earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Vanderbilt University, which he attended on a U.S. Navy ROTC scholarship. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Following four years service in the Navy, he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to obtain a masters degree in engineering. He was employed for several years at Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tullahoma before he went into private business and obtained numerous patents for devices using laser technology. He and his partners established Precision International. Later he was involved in Cubic Precision (now Cubic Transportation Systems). He sold Cubic in 1979 and became a consultant with Opti-Logic for the remainder of his career. Robin Hines was on the track teams in high school and college. This set him on a course of running daily and participation in races all over the country. He ran 110 marathons, including at least one in each of the United States and in several foreign countries. He was a 30-year member of the Tullahoma Noon Rotary Club, which he served as president for a term. He also served a term as District 6780 governor in the central and eastern Tennessee regions. In his many travels for business and pleasure, he always would find a Rotary Club to visit. Robin Hines was a Boy Scout as a youth and advanced to the rank of Eagle. He served as a scoutmaster in Troop 319 in Tullahoma for 15 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Tullahoma for more than 50 years, served two terms on the Tullahoma Board of Education and was chairman of the board of Trans-Financial Bank. He had served on the Coffee County Commission since his first election in 1994. He was involved in the organizing of Bonnaroo in Coffee County. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Gail Vester Hines; three daughters, Phyllis Hines, of Atlanta, Miriam Hines, of Charlotte, N.C.; Mary Beth Hines Howell, of Lynchburg, Tenn., and her husband, Eric; and one son, Robin (Bob) Hines, of Brentwood, Tenn., and his wife, Tiffany. He was grandfather ("Oompah") to Helen and Paden Tuggle, of Atlanta; Ashley and Addison Hearn of Charlotte; Claudia, Annabell and Cole Hines, of Brentwood; and Austa Howell of Lynchburg. He also is survived by a brother, Louis C. Hines, and his wife Joyce, of Hendersonville, Tenn.; a sister, Ruth Hines Dickson, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at Tullahomas First United Methodist Church, 208 W. Lauderdale St. 37388. Burial will be Monday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. in Spring Hill Cemetery, 5110 Gallatin Road, Nashville. Donations in Robin Hines memory may be made to the James L. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Kilgore Funeral Home, 215 Mitchell Blvd., Tullahoma.
