R.A. Igou Jr.

Dr. R.A. Igou Jr., 92, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at DeKalb Regional Medical Center. Arlene Igou, his loving and devoted wife of more than 70 years, preceded him in death. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Deema Igou, of Fort Payne; sister, Hazel Igou Sauls, of Fort Payne; daughters and son-in-law, Susan Long, of Fort Payne, and Mary and Ben Shurett, of Boaz; grandchildren, Christy (Matt) Brandon, Anna (Scott) Shinabargar, Ellen Igou and Alex (Lauren) Igou, Karen Stout, Chris Long and Charlotte (Steve) Harkins, Brad (Kimberly) Shurett and Will (Katie) Shurett; great-grandchildren, Margaret-Bailey Turner, Lili Brandon, Susanna Brandon, Benjamin Shinabargar, Will Stout, Emily Stout, Avery Burke, Sadie Long, Patrick Long, Drew Harkins and Jay Shurett. Dr. Igou was also past president of the Fort Payne Lions Club, where he was a member for more than 65 years. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor for Lions Club International. Dr. Igou was a family practice physician for 59 years in DeKalb County. He was instrumental in the creation of the DeKalb General Hospital. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a physician in the Panama Canal Zone during World War II. He was past president of the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce, held almost every leadership position at his church and taught Disciple Bible study classes there for many years. Services will be Friday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Fort Payne with the Revs. Ricky Smith, Robert Hayes and Jim Russell officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church. Wilson Funeral Home will be in charge.
