Basil Whittier

Basil Winthrop Whittier, 87, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, from complications of Alzheimers disease.He was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., April 29, 1926, to Evan and Helen Whittier. He received a B.S. in civil engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. He married Ann Fisher in 1951, and they lived in Knoxville, for many years before relocating to Chattanooga in 1999.Basil served his country in the Navy during World War II. As a civil engineer employed by Tennessee Valley Authority for 35 years until he retired in 1987, he was involved in several TVA fossil fuel and nuclear projects. He was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church. Basil was an avid boater and enjoyed traveling, camping and spending winters in Fort Myers Beach, Fla.Basil was preceded in death by a brother, sister and grandson. In addition to his wife of 62 years Ann, he is survived by three children, Mike (Emily) Whittier, of Decatur, Ala., Steve (Cathy) Whittier, of Flintstone, Ga., and Bob Whittier, of Sugar Land, Texas. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Rachel (John) Burris, of Cary, N.C., Amy (Jason) Ware, of Vestavia Hills, Ala., Spencer (Ali) Whittier, of Cohutta, Ga., Carter (Megan) Whittier, of Ooltewah, and Maya Whittier, of Sugar Land, Texas.Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at Heritage Chapel with Pastors Charlie Harrison and Jacob Reedy officiating.Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tyner United Methodist Church, Chattanooga.Visit www.heritagefh.com to share words of comfort to the family and view the memorial tribute.The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road.
