EJ Overton

E.J. "Joe" Overton, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013.He was born on Jan. 8, 1930, in Cherryvale, Kan. He lived and attended school in Nevada, Mo. He served in the Navy from 1948-1952 during the Korean War. After serving his country he moved to Tennessee and worked as a disc jockey on the radio while he attended MTSU. After graduating from college he continued as a disc jockey working at WMAK in Nashville and WHAL in Shelbyville. Later he worked in HR at AEDC in Tullahoma. In 1971 he moved to Chattanooga and worked until his retirement at Combustion Engineering. He also worked at WDEF as the weekend weather man.He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Ervin and Wilma Overton; and his brothers, Denzil and Carl Overton.He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Overton; his children, David (Kathi) Overton, Chattanooga, Andrea Harrison, Manchester, Tenn., Amy Bruner, Knoxville, Carey Winsett (Matt), Lewisburg, Tenn.; stepchildren, Susan Cox and Steven Ward; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Bob (Mary) Overton; sisters, Doris Mae (Jerry) Johnson, Marybelle (Ed ) Rice; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at St. John United Methodist Church at Murray Hills Drive. Visitation will preceed the service from 1-3 p.m. at the church.His body was donated to Genesis Donor Program for medical research per his request.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, St. John Church or a charity of your choice.
