Jean Hill KnoxJean Hill Knox, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013.Jean Hill was born in Chattanooga, on July 28, 1950, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Knox Sr. Jean Hill had led a very special life as one of the first students and residential clients of Orange Grove Center. Her mother, Mrs. Effie Lou Knox, headed up a team of local volunteers to furnish the first home where Jean Hill became an occupant. Throughout Jean Hills years she participated many times in the first wave of Orange Grove activities. She enjoyed Orange Grove Camp each summer, which at that time was held at the Double-G Ranch on Lake Chickamauga.Jean Hill also enjoyed being one of the first participants of the Special Olympics. She was never fast, but she always liked to participate in the 50-foot run and many of the other Special Olympics activities. As Jean Hill grew older, Orange Grove Center grew larger. When Jean Hill first started at Orange Grove the facility was located on Main Street in a small city school building. As Orange Grove grew, so did Jean Hills experiences. For many years, she worked in Orange Groves pen assembly facility where she enjoyed talking with the other students and instructors much more than the actual assembly of the pens. She enjoyed Orange Groves pool, not for exercise, but again for socializing. The Orange Grove Christmas program was always one of Jean Hills favorite activities.Jean Hill and all of her family would like to thank the thousands of volunteers that have supported Orange Grove since 1953. The family would like to thank Orange Grove personnel for the many years of care that she has received. Our area is truly blessed to have Orange Grove Center as an integral part of caring for the disabled in Chattanooga and the local vicinity.
