Bill Newton

SOUTH PITTSBURG John William Newton, Sr., 85, of the Orme Community in South Pittsburg, died suddenly on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at his home.The son of the late James Calver and Bertha Metcalf Newton, he was a member of the Bridgeport Masonic Lodge. Bill was a cattle farmer for 45 years and was active in the local farming community, having served on the Boards of the Marion Farmers Co-op and the Marion County Livestock Association. He was also a retiree from CSX Railroad having worked there for 40 years.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, F.A. "Buddy" Newton; brother-in-law, Roland "Sonny" Blevins; and granddaughter, Hannah Newton.He is survived by his wife, Betty S. Newton; son, John W. Newton, Jr. and wife, Carol, all of Orme; granddaughter, Amy Newton of Knoxville; sister, Jane Blevins of Hixson; stepbrothers, Jack Howard of Bridgeport, Ala., and Jerry Howard of Chattanooga; sister-in-law, Cynthia Newton; and cousin, Geneva Cox, both of Bridgeport, Ala.Funeral services will be conducted South Pittsburg Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home at 5 p.m. CDT on Sunday, Sept. 22, with Billy Watkins officiating.Interment will follow at Rocky Springs Cemetery in Bridgeport, Ala.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Hannah Newton Scholarship Fund at First Volunteer Bank.Condolences may be sent by visiting www.rogersfuneralhome.com.The family will receive friends for visitation on from 4-7 p.m. CDT today, Sept. 21 at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg.
