Allen Duble

Allen Duble, "a quiet man with a gentle way," concluded a beautiful life on Monday morning, March 31, 2014, and now dwells with his Savior in Paradise. Born in 1934 in Camden, N.J., Mr. Duble attended Highland College, which later became Covenant College, an institution he would come serve as the first vice president of development. A man of passionate faith and incessant puns, it is no wonder he was voted "Class Clown" in his high school class of 1954. That year, his senior quote was "to faithfully serve Jesus Christ throughout my life." He achieved his aspiration admirably over the rest of his life with an anchoring faith and humble repentance. He was fond of the Proverb, "Blessed is the man whose quiver is full," and he considered himself to be amply blessed as patriarch to a clan of Dubles that includes eight children, Eric and Debby Duble, Chattanooga; Debbie and Bill Cairns, Chattanooga; Mark and Lynn Duble, Lookout Mountain; Susan Duble, Lookout Mountain; Greg and Debbie Duble, Lookout Mountain; Troy and Sarah, Lookout Mountain; Robyn and Greg Gamache, Lookout Mountain; Mark and Cindi Wallace, Cedar Park, Texas; 32 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He and his bride of 40 years, Sharon Dwyer Duble, counted it a privilege to be entrusted with so many to love and call their own. He was consoled by and counted on God's gracious covenantal promise to preside over his and Sharon's family tree, an assurance he recited frequently, "I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your children and your children's children, to be your God, and the God of your children after you." Mr. Duble served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, most recently at Rock Creek Fellowship (PCA) where he and his wife and some of his children were founding members. Vocationally, after a few years in sales, he devoted much of his professional life to Christian education and nurturing generosity in others. After serving as vice president of development at Covenant College, he held a similar post at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. Along the way, he served as a consultant to many Christian ministries throughout the country. During his retirement years, he continued to work to advance Covenant College, an institution he adored and whose mission he embraced. He delighted in small pleasures, whether Goody Good Donuts, Tasty Cakes, his wifes apple crumb pie or even burnt toast. He appreciated a corn-cob pipe and a game of Peruvian Rummy. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and admiring antique cars, while understandably trying his best to stay away from dancing and cats. Tender and conscientious, prayerful and loyal, Grandpa Dubles Christmas Eve recitations of Luke 2 and "Twas the night before Christmas" will be missed. So too will be the enthusiasm he had for making known his Savior, whose patience he counted on and whose promised gift of eternal life he was desperately eager to share. Now he knows face to face the One toward whom he pointed so many others. A memorial service for Mr. Duble will be held at noon on Thursday, April 3, at at Rock Creek Fellowship (Durham) on Lookout Mountain preceded by a time of visitation at 11 a.m. at the church. There will be a reception and visitation after the service for out of town guests at the Fairyland Club.
