Marshall McEwen

Marshall McEwen, 83, of Ooltewah, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014, in Manchester, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Winifred McEwen, of Sale Creek, Tenn.; brothers, Malcolm and Tommy McEwen. Marshall was born in Sale Creek and graduated from Sale Creek High School where he played basketball. Marshall served his country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. He was stationed in Alaska. After his honorable discharge he attended Lincoln Memorial University and graduated with a degree in education. He also attended George Peabody College where he earned a masters in education. He was an employee of Hamilton County School System for 30 years, as a teacher and assistant principal at East Ridge High School and Ooltewah High School. At East Ridge High School he coached basketball, and baseball. Marshall was also a Free Mason and a member of Ooltewah Masonic Lodge #741 F&AM. He was a member of the Circle of 8s Square Dance Club at Allemand Hall. He also enjoyed golf and gardening. Marshall is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Billie Jo Johnson McEwen; daughter, Marsha Lea (Mike) Marlin, Manchester, Tenn.; sisters, Billie Carol (Bill) Eldridge, Soddy-Daisy, and Nancy (Don) Burton, Hixson; brother Ronald McEwen, Sale Creek; grandchildren, Craig and Gracie Jarrell, Manchester. Marshall was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church, a loving husband, father and grandfather, friend to many and will be very much missed. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Glenn Moseley and the Rev. Charles Harrison officiating. Inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to the Tyner United Methodist Church Building Fund, 6805 Standifer Gap Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
