Virginia "Gin" McElroy, 85, departed this life Saturday, March 29, 2014. She was born Oct. 31, 1928 in Chattanooga, to the late Mr. Frederick Watkins and Ms. Cora Bell Jones. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Walter Lee McElroy; her parents; her sisters, Barbara Johnson, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Elizabeth Pope, of Chattanooga. Virginia accepted the Lord in her life at an early age and was a true faithful servant of Gods word. She was an avid reader of the Bible, everyone that knew her; knew that she loved the Lord. She was a faithful member of Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served on the Stewardess, Usher and Trustee Boards. She leaves to cherish her memories a loving son, Walter Wayne McElroy, Chattanooga; a loving devoted daughter, Kim (Frederick) Houston, Braselton, Ga.; five grandchildren, Marcus (Ariana) Hughes, Jackson, Mich., Terrance (Tiffany) McElroy, Chattanooga, Tarhaka McElroy, Jackson, Mich., Frederick Houston Jr. and Brooke Houston, both of Braselton, Ga.; 11 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 at Quinn Chapel AME Church. Interment at 12:30 p.m. National Cemetery. The body will lie in state after noon today and the family will receive friends from 5:30 7:30 p.m. today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
