Dr. Robert Shearer

McDONALD Dr. Robert Shearer, 96, passed away Monday, July 27, 2014, after a long illness surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1918, the ninth of 10 children, Robert Vernon Shearer left the family farm at an early age to pursue his education. Graduating from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After achieving the rank of Captain and earning his U.S. citizenship, he was discharged and soon took the call of the mission field starting a hospital in Ranchi, India. When he returned to the United States, he finished a residency in ophthalmology and subsequently helped start the ophthalmology residency program and Loma Linda University. Throughout his life, his passion for education and medicine were only matched by his since of adventure. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marjolyn. He is survived by his wife, Kerry, and six children, Bobetta, Don, Rita, Dick, Bob and Bill. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 1, at Collegedale Seventh-Day Adventist Church with a reception following the service.
