Gilbert Stone

Gilbert Franklin Stone, 83, of Ooltewah, went to be with his Savior on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014. He was born in Cumberland Furnace (Dickson County), Tenn. After graduating from Charlotte High School, he attended Austin Peay State University where he received a bachelor of science in Physics. He later completed a master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a master's degree in Public Health from Harvard University. Gil served in the Navy for 12 years, serving during the Korean War and achieving the rank of Commander. He was awarded with the China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service, the Navy "E" Ribbon, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. After working for TVA for 32 years, Gil retired and developed a business as a medical physicist. He was a very talented Gospel singer and bluegrass musician and also had a lifetime passion for fishing. The most valued aspect of his life was his faith as evidenced by his dedication to his church, most recently Ooltewah Baptist Church, and the Christian role model he established for his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Annabelle Stone. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Irene Tenpenny Stone; daughters, Rebecca (Michael) Evatt and Caroline (Hugh) Morrow; brothers, Donald (Betty Lou) Stone and Robert (Earnestene) Stone; grandchildren, Jordan (Carrie) Evatt, Tyler (Paige) Evatt, Sarah Evatt, Carly (Doug) Moss, Meredith (Jay) Brooks, Hannah Morrow; and precious great-grandchild Tate Evatt. We will always cherish the Christian heritage that he instilled in our lives. Funeral services were held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Ooltewah Baptist Church, Rev. William Mason officiating. Interment will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Gideons International or Ooltewah Baptist Church Building Fund.
