Valeria Nethery

Valeria "Val" Krantz Nethery, 94, died at her home Monday, Aug. 25, 2014. She was a resident of Trenton for the past 62 years. Val was born in Klevenville, Wis. on Sept. 7, 1919, and was raised in the Milwaukee, Wis. area. During WWII she worked as a civil servant for the US War Department in Washington, D.C. and subsequently in Anchorage, Alaska. While in Anchorage she met and married her husband of 66 years, Martin Allison Nethery. After returning to the 'lower 48' Val and Martin settled in Dade County where Val worked at the Bank of Dade from which she retired as executive vice president in 1984. Val was an active member of the community and served with several volunteer and civic organizations. She served with the Trenton Fire Department in one of the first groups of women firefighters in the U.S. She was a Gril Scout Leader, taught swimming in Dade County for the American Red Cross, and was a volunteer for the Dade County Library and Hutcheson Hospice. Val was a founding member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church. Val was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Catherine Krantz; husband, Martin A. Nethery; sister, Dorothy Wierth; and son, Michael J. Nethery. Survivors include daughters, Patricia Nethery (Anthony) Emanuel, of Trenton, Ga. and Dana A. Nethery, of Hopkinsville, Ky.; son, K. Paul (Carolyn) Nethery, of Trenton, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. The family request, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1032, Trenton, GA 30752. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Friday Aug. 29, at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 151 New England Road, Trenton, with Leo Herbert, Monsignor. Family will receive friends 6 until 9 p.m. Thursday at Ryan Funeral Home, Trenton.
