Brian Christopher Cooke, 28, departed this life on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014. He was born on Sept. 30, 1985. Brian is the son of Karen Cooke Smelley and Charles H. Smelley Jr. He was raised in Stanley United Methodist Church and later transferred his membership to Olive Branch in Nashville. Brian graduated with honors from Brainerd High School in 2003 where he was voted Mr. Brainerd High School. Brian received a full academic scholarship to Vanderbilt University and later transferred to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and graduated with a B.S. degree in Bio Chemistry. While at UTC, Brian became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. (Eta Phi Chapter). He held various positions in this organization including president, secretary and director of Intake. Upon graduation Brian was employed by CVS Pharmacy as a certified pharmacy technician. Brian relocated to the Nashville area in 2009 where he was employed by DaVita Inc. and at the time of his death, Community Health Systems as a Clinical Application Systems Analyst. Brian was preceded in death by grandmothers, Joyce F. Cooke and Mary Smelley. Brian will be missed by many. Those left to cherish his precious memories are his parents, Rev. Charles and Mrs. Karen Smelley; brother, Charles Smelley III; grandfather, James T. Cooke. He will be dearly missed by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, fraternity brothers, classmates and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at Stanley United Methodist Church. Interment: Lakewood Memory Garden East. The body will lie in state at the funeral home today after noon. The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Omega ceremony will be held at 5 p.m this evening and the family will receive friends immediately following the ceremony from 6-7 p.m. at John P.
