Dr. J. James "Jim" Greasby passed away Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at his home in Red Bank after a long and well lived life. Jim enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, listening to and playing classical music and visiting with his family in California. Jim was born on Feb. 12, 1930 in Mangum, Okla. He graduated from Bob Jones University (B.A. and M.F.A.) and the University of Southern California (D.M.A.). Jim taught music at Bob Jones University, Azusa Pacific College, Bryan College and Cadek Conservatory. Later he served as Organist/Choir director at several local churches including Christ Episcopal Church and Grace Episcopal Church. In 1986, Jim founded the Chattanooga Bach Choir which he directed for 20 years. He was most proud of the Chattanooga Bach Choir and always felt it was his one real contribution to society. Jim was a Harpsichordist for the Cadek Baroque Ensemble. Jim was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ruby and Charles Greasby; sister, Helen; and brothers, George Charles "Bruv", John Walter, Jerry Lahoma, Tommy Gene and Sonny. Surviving family include sisters-in-law, Irene and Frances; nieces, Janice Greasby (Bruce) Bradford; Stacy Greasby (Steve) Lopez and Leslie Lou Greasby (a favorite); nephews, John Greasby, Jerry (Stephanie) Greasby Jr., Chuck (Cindy) Greasby, Wade Greasby, Kirk (Lori) Greasby and Glenn Greasby; and many great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Christ Episcopal Church, 663 Douglas St., Chattanooga, TN 37403. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chattanooga Bach Choir, Christ Episcopal Church or to the Community Kitchen.
