Rev. Henry Groseclos

e Rev. Henry M. Groseclose, of Hixson, passed away on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. He was 83 years old. Henry was born in Appalachia, Va., to the late Rhea P. and N. Loucille Groseclose. He was a graduate of Appalachia (Va.) High School, Tennessee Wesleyan College, and East Tennessee State University. He earned a Master of Divinity from Duke University. He served churches in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee of the Holston Conference United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Rev. Groseclose served on numerous boards and committees of Holston Conference and the Southeast Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. He was past president and Board Member of The Arc for the state of Tennessee and for Hamilton County, past member of Board of Trustees Greene Valley Developmental Center and advocate for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and numerous community social service agencies. Henry was past President of the Northside Civitan Club. Henry was a loving, dedicated man to his faith, family, and friends. He never met a stranger and was known for his outgoing and friendly personality who enjoyed traveling and had a gift of cooking and hosting friends in his home. He especially enjoyed morning coffee with his buddies, Richard Brewer, Everett Hixson, David Kling and Hugh Walker. Henry enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stuart L. Groseclose; and brother, Hugh G. Groseclose. Rev. Henry is survived by wife of 27 years, Dr. Janice Wheeler Groseclose of Hixson; daughters, the Rev. Susan (Dennis Reid) Groseclose of Nashville and Louise (Vincent) Vannoorbeeck; and grandsons, Phillip and Mark Vannoorbeeck, of Hamden, Conn.; sister-in-law Helen Groseclose, of Parma, Ohio; and a niece and nephew. A Celebration of Life and Resurrection at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16 at First-Centenary United Methodist Church with The Rev. Gary Grogg, The Rev. Dr. David Harr, The Rev. Dr. Al Bowles, and The Rev. Dr. Doug Fairbanks officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, at the church, prior to the service and again following the service. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the United Methodist Church ministers and their wives.
